One of the aim of the group consists in the study of a novel way of approaching the problem of synchronization between the economic (stationary) and dynamic layers. This is the so-called integrated control which studies advanced control strategies (generally, MPC) that incorporates the economic objective directly into the dynamic problem. Hence, the RTO tasks are moved to the MPC layer with the aim of including the economic optimization into the control optimization. Figure 2 shows this solution.

The hierarchical control structure provides a worse performance then the integrated one. Thus, it is desirable to design integrated control strategies, which, together with a better performance, provide such properties like stability, recursive feasibility, convergence to the economic optimum, and an acceptable computational cost.
